California Residents ‘Floored’ by Higher Health-Care Costs

Obama supporters in California are having a change of heart on the president’s health-care law as they learn what it will mean for their insurance premiums. “I was laughing at Boehner — until the mail came today,” one resident told the San Jose Mercury News.

The resident, Tom Waschura of Portola, Calif., said that the cost for insurance for his family of four went up nearly $10,000 from his previous plan. “I really don’t like the Republican tactics, but at least now I can understand why they are so pissed about this,” he added.

Another Californian, Cindy Vinson of San Jose, said she was also surprised by the rising cost of her policy, which shot up $1,800. “Of course, I want people to have health care,” she said. “I just didn’t realize I would be the one who was going to pay for it personally.”

The Mercury News reports that many other Bay Area residents were “floored” after seeing their previous plans had been replaced with more expensive plans in order to make up the difference for policies and regulations in Obamacare.

Both Vinson and Waschura, who identified themselves as independents, expressed that they had previously supported President Obama, but that the sticker shock was not what they were expecting. “I’m not against Obamacare,” Waschura explained. “It’s just the initial shock. I’m holding out hope that there will be a correction over a handful of years.”
