Busted

A week ago, Egypt asked Germany to return a 3,400-year-old bust of Queen Nefertiti, which is currently housed in a Berlin museum. The Germans refused. Good thing, too, because it’s now apparent that Egypt can’t protect its own antiquities from looters, as Alex Joffe reports in the WSJ. The thievery is a shame that must sadden many Egyptians who would prefer to protect their heritage, for a combination of nationalist, historical, and economic reasons. But the fact remains that the pharaohs aren’t safe in Cairo.
