Governor Jerry Brown isn’t too keen on legalizing marijuana in California, and thinks it will have a greater toll on states and the nation than people think. While California has already legalized medical marijuana, going further could compromise its competitiveness, Brown said.

“All of a sudden, if there’s advertising and legitimacy, how many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation?” Brown said on Meet the Press on Sunday. He added that while “a certain amount is okay, but there is a tendency to go to extremes” on these sorts of issues without considering the consequences.

“I think we need to stay alert, if not 24 hours a day, more than some of the potheads might be able to put together,” he continued. In the meantime states should await the results of marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington before moving forward.
