The attorney for Michael Brown’s family said today that the family and activist organizations will use Brown’s death to push for federal legislation requiring that all police officers across America wear body cameras, hoping that such a measure would prevent deaths like Brown’s in the future.
When asked by NBC this morning what legal avenues Brown’s family will pursue after a county grand jury declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson, attorney Benjamin Crump said that they would consider a wrongful-death civil suit and push for a “Michael Brown Law,” mandating police body cameras. He said that the family would be working with the NAACP, Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, and other organizations. (Brown’s family had mentioned this initiative earlier this week.)
A number of police departments across the country have adopted body cameras as technology has allowed it, but the practice is not yet widespread.
