Blame It on Islamophobia

My latest piece on NRO demonstrates — fairly conclusively, I think — that those in the media and political elites charging that most Americans are bigots and Islamophobes have no data to support them.

Assuming I’m correct, what explains this slander of millions of Americans? Here’s what I suspect: The elites are furious angry that the great unwashed have refused to buy their line on the Ground Zero mosque. 

Also: They also want an excuse if things go very badly for them in November. This narrative will allow them to say that the Right pulled another racist/Willie Horton/Southern strategy, whipping the yahoos into an Islamophobic frenzy so they’d go crazy on Election Day.

But that’s just a theory. I’d be eager to hear others
