Ben Carson Added to Southern Poverty Law Center’s ‘Extremist Files’

Meet the Southern Poverty Law Center’s newest “extremist”:

The posting includes a capsule biography of Carson, and quotations intended to support the SPLC’s claim that Carson is motivated by a “hateful” “anti-LGBT” animus. Quotes include this, from Carson’s 2012 book, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great:

If we can redefine marriage as between two men or two women or any other way based on social pressures as opposed to between a man and a woman, we will continue to redefine it in any way that we wish, which is a slippery slope with a disastrous ending, as witnessed in the dramatic fall of the Roman Empire.

The SPLC’s “Extremist Files,” besides Carson, include Nation of Islam head Louis Farrakhan and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke — as well as noted social scientist Charles Murray, of the American Enterprise Institute.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, founded in 1971 by lawyers active in the civil rights movement, describes itself as “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.”
