Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei has not risen even to Adolf Hitler’s level after reaching a reputed peace agreement with major world powers.
As the late CBS Radio newsman William L. Shirer chronicled in his riveting Berlin Diary, on September 30, 1938, the Nazi dictator signed the Munich Pact with Italy’s Fascist leader Benito Mussolini, France’s prime minister Édouard Daladier, and — most memorably — Great Britain’s prime minister Neville Chamberlain. The notorious treaty allowed Nazi Germany to swallow Czechoslovakia’s ethnic-German regions (dubbed the Sudetenland) in exchange for Germany’s renouncing additional territorial ambitions.
Waving a copy of the agreement overhead, Chamberlain infamously told a crowd outside No. 10 Downing Street: “I believe it is peace for our time.”
Few recall, however, that before he flew back to London and made that frightfully naïve statement, Chamberlain had one final meeting with Hitler in the Nazi Party’s offices in the Bavarian capital. They then issued a warm, fuzzy joint communiqué.
“We, the German Führer and Chancellor, and the British Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today,” it began. “We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference and thus to contribute to the assurance of peace in Europe.”
Despite the Iran-nuclear deal, Ayatollah Khamenei is even less gracious with Obama than Hitler was with Neville Chamberlain after the Munich Pact
For Hitler, of course, this was merely ink on paper. Eleven months later, he invaded Poland, triggered World War II, and set the steel wheels spinning on the Holocaust. Still, in the cheery afterglow of his deal with these major nations, Hitler feigned goodwill for a few bright, shining moments.
Ayatollah Khamenei could not be bothered with such pleasantries.
Even before Congress voted on Obama’s breathtakingly disastrous deal with Iran, the Islamic Republic’s “Supreme Leader” spat in the face of the President of the United States.
“We agreed to talks with the U.S. only for the nuclear issue,” Iran’s Oberste Führer said. “In other areas, we did not allow talks with the U.S. and we will not negotiate with them.”
“The Iranian nation ousted the Great Satan,” the ayatollah added. “We drove it out through the door, and we shouldn’t allow it in through the window.”
The Middle East Media Research Institute caught Khamenei sounding equally defiant on September 4:
The Americans say that they expect the Iranian government to act differently. Differently from what? Differently from Iran’s past? No. Such a thing will never happen, [because] it means violating Islamic rules and relinquishing loyalty to Islamic values. This is what they mean by ‘differently.’ That will never happen.
For good measure, Khamenei added these words about Israel: “God willing, there will be no such thing as the Zionist regime in 25 years.”
It took Adolf Hitler less than a year to turn his blandishments into Blitzkrieg. How long will it take Ayatollah Khamenei to turn his anti-American venom into anti-American violence?
