I looove George Will. But I don’t think the Russia 1917 analogy–repeated by Derb in a different context–is good one for Iraq fatalists to make. What they are saying is that because violent minorities have in the past taken over countries, all is lost in Iraq and we should give up trying to check a violent minority there. This doesn’t follow at all. In fact, if we are facing a Bolshevik-like violent minority in Iraq, its victory needn’t be inevitable. If the majority can’t accommodate democratic practices–then we’ve got a big problem.
