Take the X Train

Below, Ian has a post on the advertising that is permitted on New York subway trains and the advertising that is not. Well, I bring you some advertising that is: A few inches from an adorable little girl’s head was a poster advertising the Museum of Sex. Along with an obscured racy picture were these words: “Hard Core: A Century and a Half of Obscene Imagery.” Elsewhere, a sign read, “You spent the night in Manhattan but left your birth control in the Bronx. Maybe the IUD is right for you.” Honestly — laugh if you must (and you must!) — but I’m not entirely sure what that sign means.

I do know this: that people desire an America as sexualized and as de-moralized (Gertrude Himmelfarb’s word) as possible.
