40/40 hindsight

ABC News is reporting that independents made up about 40 per cent of the voters in both the Democratic and Republican primaries. Putting it like that makes it sound very even. But if turnout is generally higher on the Dem side that 40/40 figure could have very different impacts in each race. In New Hampshire’s previous record-breaking primary – 2000 – 240,000 ballots were cast in the GOP primary, 157,000 in the Democrat. Republicans are unlikely to see a split like that this time round.
