I’m late in turning to the summer issue of one of my favorite journals, the Claremont Review of Books, but I’d like to second Matt’s recommendation of Wendy Long’s excellent cover essay on several books about Justice Thomas. These include Thomas’s own My Grandfather’s Son: A Memoir (which I’ve previously praised as “a beautiful and powerful and revealing account of Justice Thomas’s amazing path from Pin Point to the Supreme Court—and of his relationship with the remarkable grandfather who raised and formed him”); Kevin Merida’s and Michael A. Fletcher’s Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas (which I critiqued in this piece for National Review); and Jan Crawford Greenburg’s outstanding Supreme Conflict: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Control of the United States Supreme Court.
If you’re looking for some good summer reading, I’d definitely recommend the Thomas and Greenburg books.
