Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet for their first-ever (and possibly only) debate tonight in Philadelphia. ABC News is hosting and moderating the event, scheduled after President Biden ended his reelection campaign in the wake of his disastrous debate performance in late June. Muir challenges Trump on the dog-eating stuff. This is the second time the moderators have sided with Harris; you could bet the mortgage against them ever doing this to Harris.

@dpino Americans seem to care more about pets than children, so the pivot may work.

Jeffrey Blehar

Trump is far too easy to provoke about internet nonsense that far too few people understand. It’s when he’s talking about nonsense nobody understands outside political weirdos when her making dismissive faces hurts him and helps her.

And now he’s talking about dogs being eaten. This is not good.

Noah Rothman

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

Dominic Pino

@rlowry Trump takes the bait on rallies, almost brings it back, then takes the bait on pet-eating.

Jim Geraghty

Nope, Rich, you spoke too soon. Trump claims that migrants in Springfield, Ohio are eating the pets of residents.

“I’ve seen people on television, saying my dog was taken,” Trump insists.

Dan McLaughlin

Harris went after Trump’s rallies to irritate him. She’s not doing it because voters care about this. And it worked at getting his goat, briefly, but then he pivots to immigration.

Rich Lowry

Trump takes the bait on rallies, but at least brings it back to the state of the country.

Philip Klein

The ABC moderators are trying to press Trump for responses to questions he isn’t directly answering, but allow Harris to dodge everything.

Dan McLaughlin

I doubt that the IVF thing really works against Trump, who very obviously is not the sort of principled faithful pro-lifer who would stand against IVF.
