Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet for their first-ever (and possibly only) debate tonight in Philadelphia. ABC News is hosting and moderating the event, scheduled after President Biden ended his reelection campaign in the wake of his disastrous debate performance in late June. We learned from the latest New York Times/Sienna poll this weekend that about one-third of voters nationwide don’t think they know enough about Kamala Harris yet – an apprehension that may be putting downward pressure on her vote share. Harris’s lack of definition is even more pronounced in the swing states. Thirty-seven percent of Michigan voters don’t know what Harris “stands for,” according to a CBS News/YouGov survey conducted last week. In Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, 40 and 42 percent of voters say the same. That has led the pundit class to propose the notion that tonight’s debate presents her with the opportunity to redefine herself. It’s also Trump’s opportunity to reinforce his critique of her as cypher who has deceptively concealed her far-Left policy agenda from voters until she’s safely ensconced in the White House.
