Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet for their first-ever (and possibly only) debate tonight in Philadelphia. ABC News is hosting and moderating the event, scheduled after President Biden ended his reelection campaign in the wake of his disastrous debate performance in late June. Trump says he didn’t discuss vetoing an abortion ban with his running mate.

Noah Rothman

Trump refuses to answer when asked if he would veto a federal abortion ban. “I wouldn’t have to,” he maintains.

Harris pledges to sign a federal law to overturn the laws of every state that has any restrictions at all on abortion.

Harris alleges that, in Trump’s America, there will be a “monitor” tasked with minding women, “monitoring your pregnancies, monitoring your miscarriages”

Linsey Davis claims that there is no state where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born. That understates how Democrats have voted persistently against treatment for children born after an abortion. Tim Walz himself watered down such protections:

I notice that ABC News made sure we got to the issue of abortion, which the Harris campaign thinks is one of their strongest issues, within the first fifteen minutes.

Jeffrey Blehar

Trump is doing a better job of prosecution than I expected, but it’s 15 minutes into a 90 minute debate. Harris mugs because of the muted mic; she apparently had no better plan installed than to make faces.

I judge performance and not policy; voters don’t vote on policy, as much as I wish they did. Trump’s outperforming Harris so far, and it’s a bit of a surprise. Harris needs to stop emoting like an ex-silent film actress doing her first ‘talkie’.

Dan McLaughlin

Trump just referred to Ralph Northam as the prior governor of West Virginia.

Jim Geraghty

Trump refers to “the former governor of West Virginia,” when it’s clear he’s referring to former Virginia governor Ralph Northam. Further evidence for the theory that Trump can’t remember names as well as he used to.

Philip Klein

Trump just mixed up “West Virginia” and Virginia when hitting former governor Ralph Northam’s radical comments about post-birth abortions.
