Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet for their first-ever (and possibly only) debate tonight in Philadelphia. ABC News is hosting and moderating the event, scheduled after President Biden ended his reelection campaign in the wake of his disastrous debate performance in late June. Pretty effective canned riff on Trump rallies.

Rich Lowry

Here we go—Lankford bill is all they’ve got on the border.

Dan McLaughlin

Harris flat-out lies about the fact that her party’s position is to impose legal bars to any restriction on abortion up to the moment of birth. That’s in every referendum, every bill, supported by Dems. It’s in what Tim Walz signed into law.

Noah Rothman

Asked directly by Trump whether she would ban abortions in the final trimester of pregnancy, Harris replies only, “come on.” When asked again, she changed the subject.

Dominic Pino

If Trump stuck to talking about late-term abortions, rather than Ralph Northam’s comments, he could have landed a blow against Harris there.

Philip Klein

Harris refuses to say she would oppose legalizing abortion in the third trimester.,

Dominic Pino

Harris is lying about abortion laws prohibiting IVF or prohibiting health care for miscarriages, but she is delivering her message much more coherently and sympathetically than Trump is delivering his.

Rich Lowry

Trump not particularly coherent on abortion, but getting through it. Unfortunately, he probably doesn’t know enough to rebut the charges about women not getting the care they need in true medical emergencies.

Noah Rothman

Trump says he has not discussed the issue of a federal abortion ban with his running mate, J.D. Vance, who said Trump would veto a federal ban. So, either Vance was freelancing, or Trump is dissembling.

Dan McLaughlin

Davis is very visibly trying to push a particular pro-abortion point of view.
