By my count, Panetta is the first speaker in nearly four days of programming to mention even fleetingly the ongoing war of territorial conquest in Europe – the outcome of which the U.S. and its allies are deeply invested. As an issue, this is one on which Democrats are on the side of public opinion. It’s odd that they’ve so far avoided mentioning that conflict.

Leon Panetta cites Ronald Reagan at the DNC. Tepid applause.

Notwithstanding Elissa Slotkin’s speech on “national security,” in which she did not talk about national security, Obama’s former secretary of state and CIA director Leon Panetta is the first speaker with credentials to address American security policy. So far, at least he’s sticking to the topic at hand, but the point of his speech so far is to lend his own credibility (such as it is) on foreign and military affairs to her.

Hey America – lookin’ forward to some fresh Leon Panetta?

Mark Kelly is bringing back the unseemly Obama-era comparison of the way the military works with the way our politics should work, which is okay when Democrats do it for some reason.

Jim Geraghty

Watching Mark Kelly speak, reminding everyone of his time as an astronaut, and pro forma check-the-boxes litany of Donald Trump’s flaws, is a ringing endorsement of Kamala Harris picking Tim Walz over him.

Hey, anyone want to buy some vitamins?

Philip Klein

A reminder, as we watch gun control hour at the DNC, that Kamala Harris still has not publicly disavowed her 2019 support for gun confiscation — even though her campaign said that now she only supports banning guns and not confiscating them.

This series of speakers set up by Rep. Lucy McBath — various victims of gun violence, from mothers to young survivors — is a direct pitch by the Democratic Party to the crucial demographic of suburban women. This is a play they know how to execute extremely well by now.

Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro’s “Obama accent” is now impossible for me not to hear every time he gives a speech, precisely because he talks totally differently during a normal interview. I’m watching him on NBC right now and he’s dunking Trump into a trashcan effortlessly over his stupid TruthSocial comments about how he is a “overrated Jewish governor.” Trump is forever his own worst enemy.

Jack Butler

The purpose of having this sheriff speak is obvious: to counter Democratic weaknesses on the police/summer 2020. It would require some rather acute memory-holing to work. And also willful denial of . . . what many in the party actually believe.
