Harris’s call “to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past” echoes Obama in 2008. But Obama was running as a blank slate “change” agent against a party that had controlled the White House for eight years. Harris, on the other hand, is part of the incumbent administration.
“You can always trust me to put country above party and self,” says Harris. Why? What in her record in national political life justifies that faith? She didn’t say and I don’t have access to a ready example.
Whenever someone warns against doing something “half-assed,” as Harris just said her mother did, I can’t help thinking that doing things “full-assed” doesn’t sound like a great idea either.
The cameras at the DNC did not pan to Joe Biden when Kamala Harris mentioned him because he has literally been put out to pasture after Monday night (he’s vacationing on a ranch in California), as Matt Continetti has pointed out on the Commentary podcast.
Harris thanks the president and first lady and says “we will forever be thankful to you both.” Of course, the absence of Joe and Jill Biden is a form of communication by itself.
After the rumors and hype all week long – even on air today on NBC – there is no Beyonce appearance after all. And in fact there is no surprise guest whatsoever. The surprise is: Kamala.
Joy!
Is that the first use of an f-bomb in a convention bio video? Another history-making moment.
I had been fairly bullish on Roy Cooper, the North Carolina governor, as an option for Kamala Harris’ running mate. Having watched his convention address, I’m less impressed. He just looks and sounds like the evil opposing lawyer in a John Grisham novel. “You can trust me to fight for you. I’ll get you that big settlement you deserve. Just dial 1-800-GET-PAID…”
Kinzinger’s full-throated endorsement of Kamala Harris echoes the recent discussion surrounding our old friend David French and his recent endorsement of her. The case that Donald Trump, and his populism, nationalism, isolationism and protectionism won’t do much for the cause of conservatism, is straightforward and has a lot of supporting evidence. The case that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will be better for the cause of conservatism is really, really thin. It requires a conservative to assent to the proposal of price controls, abortion on demand, taxpayer funding for abortion, liberal Supreme Court justices, the current border and immigration policies, tax hikes — well, I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
Adam Kinzinger opened by savaging the GOP because it is “no longer conservative.” But by offering his full-throated endorsement of a far-left progressive ticket, we might say the same of Mr. Kinzinger.
