Hillary vows that Kamala Harris will bulldoze the democratically-enacted laws of every state that restricts abortion.
Tonight multiple speakers, including Hillary Clinton, have referred to Kamala Harris’ late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, and told stories about her. If any speaker has mentioned Harris' father, Donald Harris, I have missed it.
Neither time nor hard experience have made Hillary Clinton a more compelling and charismatic speaker than she was back in 2016.
@pklein: I take your point. Her speech is similar to Obama’s in 2004 only insofar as it ensures that Ocasio-Cortez will be a viable figure to lead the party at some later date. And while I agree that it rejects the bipartisan façade Democrats attempted to strike in the first national election since 9/11, AOC’s speech is more reflective of what Democrats want to see from their leaders today: a remorseless and unyielding attack on all their ideological enemies until they are driven to unconditional surrender. I think it has legs.
Hillary notes that women got the vote 105 years ago. That was followed by the biggest popular-vote Republican landslide in history, electing a staunchly conservative ticket. She moves on to 1972, when Republicans won 49 states, the 1984, then Republicans did the same again, then 2016, when she lost to Donald Trump.
Hillary lauds Biden as “democracy’s champion” for usurping the powers of Congress and lauds his “competence” in abandoning Afghanistan.
@nrothman Couldn’t disagree with you more on AOC. The trick of the Obama 2004 speech was to frame progressivism in a way that made it sound moderate — it even had some culturally conservative themes about patriotism. It was a call for a post-partisan future, slamming the idea of dividing the country into red states and blue states, etc. There was none of that in AOC’s speech. It was purely about firing up a partisan crowd and narrowcasting.
That thunderous ovation suggests Democrats have forgiven Hillary Clinton for recklessly refusing to comply with the Freedom of Information Act and costing her party the presidency.
The only Democrat to lose an election to Donald Trump has taken the stage. Jinx, Dan.
Losers Night really kicks into high gear now that Hillary is here.
