The 2024 Democratic National Convention is underway in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept her party’s presidential nomination, just weeks after President Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her to succeed him. The speech Biden is giving sounds much more like a speech one gives as the nominee — touting his own accomplishments — rather than a speech on behalf of the new nominee. We’ve already heard Biden’s case for his presidency on many occasions. What we haven’t gotten to this point is a robust case for Kamala Harris — why he picked her, examples of her work as VP that would make her suited to be president, anecdotes that highlight her leadership attributes, and so on. It’s like he just dusted off the speech that was being prepared when he was expecting to be the one accepting the nomination.

Has anyone told Biden he’s not the candidate anymore? This is a stump speech, and a poor one at that.

Biden says “hate has no safe harbor.” Try telling that to Jewish college students.

Biden talking about how antisemitic marchers were emboldened by the president hits rather differently this past year.

Biden again saying that he ran because of Charlottesville, only to preside over a historic rise in antisemitism, in which he has bent over backward to try and placate the antisemites.

It is more and more evident that if the CNN debate had been conducted before an audience, Joe Biden would still be the nominee. The DNC crowd jumps in with chants, led by Nancy Pelosi, each time Joe wanders or his gears bind.

Dan McLaughlin

Nancy Pelosi in the front row leading “we love Joe” chants is like watching Cassius lead a “we love Caesar” chant.

This whole night has been like watching a funeral with the departed sitting next to us.

Biden’s not exactly all smiles up there, now, is he?

Dan McLaughlin

I’m not sure what is the point of having Biden’s daughter up here to tell us humanizing stories after he has been the president and is retiring.
