Almost all of these speeches at this convention so far could have been cut in half, and nothing of importance would have been lost. Convention organizers could have been and should have been a lot tougher — either fewer speakers, or preferably, the same number of speakers with considerably less speaking time. Make speakers get to the point, and rip out all of the predictable boilerplate and cliches. No one cares if Josh Shapiro, like Joe Biden, has never been more optimistic about the future of this country. A lot of the speakers are making similar points over and over again. It’s like that saying — “everything that needs to be said has been said, but not everyone has said it.”
If you were trying to give the best possible argument for what Shapiro is saying about “real freedom,” what would it be? It certainly sounds like he’s saying that Democrats are for “real freedom” and “real freedom” is whatever Democrats are for.
Jim: Maybe this is a trend in the making. (You missed Kamala’s brother-in-law, who spoke tonight.) Not a good one, I should think.
The best thing about listening to Josh Shapiro deliver a speech tonight at the DNC is that it’s like hearing Obama’s understudy give an encore.
Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, who many expected would be Harris’ running mate, is addressing the convention. Okay, now I see what everyone meant when they said he sounds like he’s doing a Barack Obama impression.
Ramesh, I know it seems like a lot when we hear from Harris’ two stepchildren, her husband, and her sister, but Trump had five in Milwaukee: son Eric Trump, impending daughter-in-law Kimberly Guilfoyle, daughter-in-law Lara Trump, son Donald Trump Jr., and granddaughter Kai Trump.
What’s the record for most relatives of a presidential candidate to speak at a convention, I wonder?
I know it’s just after 10 pm for those of you on the east coast, but don’t head to bed yet, folks! The Democrats still have Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Tim Walz to go!
@jblehar @pklein Maybe Kaling has a grudge against J.Lo.
@jblehar I assume the “hang in there” line was a reference to the Red Sox being in 3rd place, and currently out of the playoffs.
