The 2024 Republican National Convention is underway in Milwaukee, where Donald Trump will accept his party’s presidential nomination just days after surviving an assassination attempt. Follow along for live updates and analysis from the NR team:

Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers goes after, not just Joe Biden’s electric vehicle mandates, but electric vehicles themselves. He says they require 40 percent less labor to build, and the rare earth minerals required to make them are largely sourced from China. “It is impossible to build an EV without getting into bed” with the Chinese Communist Party.

I actually took a different impression from Kari Lake’s speech than @jgeraghty. Despite some barbed attacks on media at the top and a few oblique but charged references to election security, I thought Lake delivered a relatively on-message speech focused on tonight’s theme, keeping America safe. It was so subdued, in fact, that it may not even be especially memorable. That’s a bit of a surprise from Lake.

Oh, Kari Lake. All that over-the-top unctuousness and singing Donald Trump’s praises, and you never even made the long list of Donald Trump’s potential running mates.

“President Trump is the toughest president since Teddy Roosevelt.” – Perry Johnson, businessman and former 2024 Republican presidential candidate.

Not only did Brooks tout the Republican Party as the only pro-Israel party in America, he attacked the Biden administration for presiding over a rising tide of violent antisemitism in the streets and on college campuses. In related news, a June Gallup poll found that 49 percent of Americans say antisemitism is a “very serious problem,” up from just 9 percent in 2003.

Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Committee asked the delegates to applaud if they supported Israel, and was answered by thunderous applause. He pointed out that if someone did that at the Democratic convention in Chicago, they would be booed off the stage. “My message to the American Jewish community is that there is only one pro-Israel party, and it’s the Republican Party.”

It will be interesting to see if any speaker at the Democratic convention in Chicago does mention Israel, and whether any are willing to make a forthright statement of support for the Jewish state.

Matthew Brooks, CEO of the Republican Jewish Coalition, leads the crowd in cheers when he asks if they support Israel: “Now, if someone tried that at the Democrats’ convention, they’d be booed off the stage.”

Milwaukee — It’s Senate candidate showcase night here in Wisconsin. We’re about to hear from a bunch of battleground-state Republican Senate candidates, most of whom have already won their primaries and were personally recruited by this year’s National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Steve Daines to run against battle-tested Democratic incumbents this fall.

The theme of the second night of the Republican National Convention is “Make America Safe Again.” A video beginning the proceedings uses a Bat-Signal to demonstrate that the citizens of crime-ridden cities are crying out for Trump.

I don’t understand why Republicans or conservatives should feel so sorry for big banks right now. I go to a certain ballfield and the Big Bank that sponsors it makes sure every summer it spends an enormous amount of energy and advertising communicating how much it shares progressive values, and how, by implication, anyone who disagrees shouldn’t really exist at all.

It’s one thing to support free enterprise and free speech, it’s a bridge too far to demand I admire every winner.
