The ‘Trump rising again’ lines are getting dangerously close to suggesting it occurred on the third day while a veil in Trump Tower was torn in half.

Ohio is indeed a great state. J. D. Vance is right about that.

Dan McLaughlin

My usual impression of Vance is that he is sharp and hard-hitting but lacking in charm or humor. That presentation is generally described ecstatically by the very same people who told us that Ron DeSantis could never win an election because he is sharp and hard-hitting but lacking in charm or humor.

Usha Chillukuri Vance says that when she met her husband, he was “the most interesting guy in the world.”

Stay thirsty, my friends.

A lot of how people process Vance will be visuals and feels. What’s interesting is the contrast between his hardscrabble upbringing and Marine Corps service and how he appears and presents himself – he looks and sounds more like a frat bro who became an investment banker than a guy who came up from nothing. We’ll see which vibe people get from him.

J.D. Vance has a life story that was compelling enough to lead to a bestselling memoir, so I expect him to leave heavily on that in his speech introducing himself to the many viewers who do not know him. Traditionally, we’ve seen Vance speak in smaller venues and on television, but he has less experience hitting high notes in a convention hall like this one. So it should be interesting to see if he seizes the moment.

It might be interesting to compare J. D. Vance’s RNC speech in 2024 to Barack Obama’s DNC speech in 2004. It’s underappreciated that Vance admires (or at least admired) Obama and, strange as it may seem, seems to have modeled his aspirations after Obama’s.

Dan McLaughlin

Listening to Don Jr., I don’t think he will ever be president, but it’s easy to picture him representing a deep-red constituency in the House or maybe the Senate.

Jim Geraghty

Donald Trump Jr. says, “I want to speak to the people who are tuned out of politics, and maybe haven’t voted.” Okay, but the people who are tuned out of politics are not watching the third night of the Republican National Convention.
