President Biden and Donald Trump meet for their first presidential debate of 2024 tonight in Atlanta. CNN is hosting and moderating the event (click here to read about the debate rules), which is one of only two debates currently scheduled between the presumptive nominees of their respective parties. Joe Biden just insisted that he is the first president this decade to not oversee the deaths of U.S. troops overseas under his watch. Three U.S. soldiers were killed in a Shiite militia attack on a base in Jordan in January. That’s an egregious lapse.

Dan McLaughlin

Trump: “Am I allowed to respond to him?” Tapper: “You can do whatever you want.”

Michael Brendan Dougherty

This is why they scheduled the debate so early. Biden looks bad, and they want people to forget about it.

Dan McLaughlin

Biden sounds half-dead, whereas Trump merely sounds sedated.

Philip Klein

Well, at least we settled one thing — Biden doesn’t look like somebody on performance enhancing drugs.

Noah Rothman

Joe Biden looks awful. He sounds awful. He cannot moderate the tempo of his speech so that he’s generally unintelligible. This is not what Democrats wanted to see at the outset of this debate.

Jeffrey Blehar

Biden’s voice is gone. He already sounds foggy and weak. This is an inauspicious start.

Audrey Fahlberg

Kicking off your first response with a cough isn’t a great look.

Jim Geraghty

Someone get Biden a cough lozenge.

Rich Lowry

Biden‘s voice is terrible
