President Biden and Donald Trump meet for their first presidential debate of 2024 tonight in Atlanta. CNN is hosting and moderating the event (click here to read about the debate rules), which is one of only two debates currently scheduled between the presumptive nominees of their respective parties. Biden just accused Trump of “separating babies from their mothers” with a complete absence of irony just a minute or two after ending the late-term abortion discussion.

Jeffrey Blehar

Biden actually found something like a message near the end of his abortion response. It’s the first time he’s sounded coherent all night.

Trump has an hour to blow this, but he has run rings around Biden so far simply by triumphing utterly on the aesthetics (which, as I noted up front on this blog, are what people are really paying attention).

Michael Brendan Dougherty

CNN is letting them have a back and forth on abortion, for which they are both well-rehearsed. Trump went back to his effective rhetoric against late term abortion, Biden went to hide behind the generic popularity of the Roe settlement, without specifying all that entails.

Dan McLaughlin

Trump may be a largely insincere pro-lifer – or at least and late and convenient convert – but he really does grasp at a visceral level (Trump does everything at a visceral level) how to convey disgust at very late-term abortions.

Dominic Pino

Biden should tell his party’s activists that he’s against late-term abortions, I don’t think they got the message.

Haley Strack

Say what you want about the guy, but that Trump hasn’t yet taken a cheap dig at Biden’s incoherence, is a mature, good look for him.

Dan McLaughlin

Trump sounds as if he knows what he is talking about, which in large part he does not. Biden is unable to pass even that low bar.

Ramesh Ponnuru

Biden should have been able to knock the abortion answer out of the park but he couldn’t find the ball.

Jeffrey Blehar

Biden’s rambling, completely confused attempt at telling a story (?) to illustrate his position on abortion was a real catastrophe.

Noah Rothman

“There’s a lot of young women [being] raped by their in-laws, by their spouses,” Biden insists in his defense of Roe’s protection.

Trump counters by noting more women are being raped by criminal migrants.

We’re 18 minutes into this thing.
