The 2024 Republican presidential candidates meet Wednesday night for their third debate, this time in Miami, hosted by NBC News. The on-stage grouping is smaller this time, with Mike Pence having dropped out since the last debate and other candidates not making the cut. Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy are set to participate, while front-runner Donald Trump once again will counter-program instead. Jim, at what cost? Russia obviously has an interest in preserving its access to its most important naval base. And, as we saw, it could annex Crimea with little resistance (given the actual population there). Our institutional position which never favored no-fly-zones or troops suggests there are some limits on what costs we’re willing to pay to pursue this interest. And we’ve set them low enough to indicate that maybe it’s not a deep and enduring interest. Anyway- back to the debate.

Michael, the United States has a great interest in ensuring that Vladimir Putin and the Russian army cannot willy-nilly redraw borders that were in place in January 2022, or 2014, or any other year.

DeSantis hits back at Haley with what his camp thinks is a major vulnerability for her—her pursuit of Chinese business as governor

In case you missed it…Democrat-turned-Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praises Vivek Ramaswamy’s aversion to U.S. support for Ukraine: “Give credit where credit is due. Vivek Ramaswamy makes some good points on Ukraine,” RFK Jr. wrote on X. “Glad to see some of this awareness in the Republican party.”

DeSantis getting hyped for the free and open Indo-Pacific. Shinzo Abe’s legacy lives.
