The 2024 Republican presidential candidates meet Wednesday night for their third debate, this time in Miami, hosted by NBC News. The on-stage grouping is smaller this time, with Mike Pence having dropped out since the last debate and other candidates not making the cut. Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy are set to participate, while front-runner Donald Trump once again will counter-program instead. U.S. crude oil and petroleum products imports from Venezuela peaked in 1997 at 62 million barrels per month. It declined through 2018 to 20 million barrels per month, then the U.S. stopped Venezuelan imports entirely in July 2019. Imports resumed in January of this year and are currently at around 5 million barrels per month.

Thank you, Tim Scott, for remembering that gas prices are still really high by historical standards. The national average for a gallon of unleaded last month was $3.70 — and October is not a particularly high-demand month.

“You were always a liberal when it comes to the environment” says Haley to DeSantis.

DeSantis waves it off saying that drilling in the Everglades isn’t wise.

I can see somebody out there asking, “who cares about the political situation in Venezuela?” but I remind you that this debate is in Florida, and the Venezuelan-Americans of Florida are every bit as passionately anti-Communist as the Cuban-American community. Lot of GOP votes in those communities.

I support parental consent laws like the one Tim Scott alluded to, but it comes with the downsides for privacy for families whose data, held by Silicon Valley, will be verified in new ways.

Ramaswamy talks a big game about the need for a moral renewal in America and then behaves himself in the most ill-mannered, disruptive, and, as Haley said, scummy way in these debates.

Luther Ray Abel

Tim Scott, getting laughs and hitting his points, looks more comfortable on the stage tonight than he’s been to this point. I can’t help but wonder if knowing he has no chance allows for buoyancy he couldn’t muster in first two debates.

A missed opportunity by another candidate to back up Haley in declaring children of candidates to be off limits after Vivek’s low blow.

Philip Klein

Haley was well justified in her disgust with Vivek in going after her daughter’s use of TikTok. “You’re just scum.”
