The 2024 Republican presidential candidates meet Wednesday night for their third debate, this time in Miami, hosted by NBC News. The on-stage grouping is smaller this time, with Mike Pence having dropped out since the last debate and other candidates not making the cut. Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy are set to participate, while front-runner Donald Trump once again will counter-program instead. I’d watch an hour-long debate just between DeSantis and Haley and just about abortion.

Michael Brendan Dougherty

Great answer on abortion by Ron DeSantis.

Rich Lowry

Jeff, Totally agree. I find these nights satisfying in that they make it possible to forget for a couple of hours that Donald Trump is running in this race. Then, reality immediately returns.

Did the “elites” who don’t care about the border or fentanyl that Ron DeSantis was talking about include the man who was president of these United States from 2017 to 2021?

Jim Geraghty

“Stone cold dead at the border” is A) going to be one of the memorable moments of this night and B) would either be a good band name or a good thriller title.

Michael Brendan Dougherty

I know it’s an applause line. But DeSantis is basically making the Duterte promise of tasking border patrol or other police with executing criminals trafficking fentanyl without trial. He should stop saying this. We are not yet in the desperate way that the Philippines was with drug gangs. And we don’t have to give up on law and order.

Noah Rothman

If you’re a Republican in the market for fantastical pronouncements like “build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it,” wouldn’t you already be a committed Trump supporter?

Rich Lowry

Yeah, wow, 134-118

Michael Brendan Dougherty

I’m not sure treating fentanyl “like a disease” really applies. Many victims of fentanyl are not habitual or problem drug users at all.

Michael Brendan Dougherty

Looking for a consequential takeaway from tonight’s contest. And it’s that the Pacers and Jazz point totals against each other suggest a new peak in offense-friendly officiating.
