Exceptionally good education answer from DeSantis

Jack Butler

I hate the decline of attention spans and the accelerating churn of the news cycle as much as anyone. But talk of Christie’s governorship feels like ancient history now.

Andrew McCarthy

Some excellent answers, but we need to be practical. If we want to win, need DeSantis and Nikki to get in a room and decide who’s top/bottom of ticket. Promise Christie AG, Scott HUD or whatever, and the others something good (ignore Vivek, he’s Trump’s guy). But if this is going to be a race, gotta be DeSantis/Haley -v- Tump or Haley/DeSantis -v- Trump. Do we want it or not?

Kathryn Jean Lopez

Mark, what does that mean for Haley?

Rich Lowry

It’s weird for almost the entirety of the debate to proceed as of it’s all about the policy positions of the candidates polling at roughly 15 percent or lower, and not at all about the guy polling at 50 percent or above

Michael Brendan Dougherty

Wrong, Mark.

Doug Burgum: A+

Everyone else is a C.

Except Pence who is a D.

Jim Geraghty

Mark, now I’m wondering how you’ve judged my ties and their knots every time I’ve been up in the New York office.

Philip Klein

Re: Nikki Haley on health care. None of what she proposes is remotely possible with Obamacare’s mandates on the books.

Jim Geraghty

Rich, I was just going to say, if your plan to win the nomination requires unifying all the non-Trump options, you probably want to avoid any unnecessary antagonization of non-Trump rivals.

Mark Wright

Ranking the candidates’ ties.

Chris Christie — the pinkish-purple adds a nice pop of color. A+

Tim Scott — the striped blue-and-red regimental-style tie looks great. A-

Ron DeSantis & Doug Burgum — the understated patterns add a bit of depth and texture to their otherwise boring choices of red. C+

Vivek Ramaswamy & Mike Pence — their shiny red ties look cheap and are too jarring a contrast with their very dark suits. Plus the knots are too wide. D-
