Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, said that his campaign is committed to performing well in the Hawkeye State, but looked to downplay expectations for August’s Ames Straw Poll — an early test of the state of the GOP field.
“As to the straw poll, I don’t know that we need to win it,” he told Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson on WHO Radio. “I think we need to do well and show some progress.”
A Des Moines Register poll released this weekend showed Pawlenty in fifth place among the GOP contenders in Iowa.
