Huntsman Plan: Rely on Independent Voters in Open Primaries

Jon Huntsman is counting on independent voters to catapult him to primary wins in New Hampshire and South Carolina, whose open primaries allow both independents and Republicans to vote.

“These are wide open primaries, we forget that,” Huntsman told Politico. “[I] think, given the fluidity of the race in these early states, that we stand a pretty good chance, and we’re putting that to the test.”

Top Huntsman strategist John Weaver told Politico that the campaign still intended “to do well — extremely well — among Republicans.”
