Summer Layoffs if Wis. Union Bill Not Passed Soon

According to the Wisconsin Assembly speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, delaying passing the union bill could lead to thousands of layoffs in the summer. From Wisconsin radio station WTAQ:

Wisconsin’s Republican Assembly speaker says public employee unions will have to choose this week between bargaining concessions and thousands of layoffs.

The Walker administration says the budget repair bill which limits union bargaining rights must be approved by Saturday — or else the current budget will end with a $100 million deficit this summer.

Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald says that would mean “thousands of layoffs” for state and local government employees and school teachers. And he told a Milwaukee radio station Monday that the layoff notices would start going out next week if the unions keep fighting the governor’s plans.
