Five Dead

The official death toll from the past two days’ clashes is thirteen – five from yesterday. Many more are injured.

An aside: Every one of those deaths is a tragedy. But it is actually a pretty low number given the millions of protesters who have taken to the streets. In the scheme of history, particularly the moments of the fall of autocrats, this cannot so far be counted as a particularly brutal crackdown. The media has been, I think, somewhat overeager to play up every moment of conflict between pro- and anti-Mubarak demonstrators, overdramatizing the moments of violence, at the expense of less exhilarating but more important coverage of what might be going on behind the scenes among power players.
