Jane Shaw on Higher Ed in the WSJ
In today’s Wall Street Journal, Jane Shaw has an article focused on a comment by North Carolina’s new governor, Pat McCrory, to the effect that many of the courses offered in the UNC system seem to have little value. Naturally, he was attacked as being anti-education, but that charge is wide of the mark, Jane argues.
Much of what goes on in the UNC system has minimal benefit with respect to occupational skills and knowledge, and many students coast through without learning much of what used to be regarded as the pillars of a liberal-arts education. Increasing cost coupled with decreasing benefit — just what you would expect from any government-dominated enterprise.
