This Los Angeles Times op-ed was linked to in the Web Briefing over the weekend and well worth a read. It tells the story of a young Afghan woman whose cousins are selling her to be married for $20,000.
One of the underreported aspects of Obama’s plan for Afghanistan, which involves discussions with the “good” Taliban, is the issue of what this says about the future of women in the country. Just because some Taliban aren’t shooting at U.S. troops, it doesn’t follow that they should be partners in the future of Afghanistan. Their laws and plans for Afghanistan are an abomination to free countries everywhere, and Obama needs to be more forceful on this.
